Bien que le Dictionnaire de la chimie et de ses applications de Clément Duval et Raymonde Duval fait un renvoi synonymique du terme «gomme de bois» à la notion plus technique de «xylane», on ne saurait considérer ces termes comme étant interchangeables, la gomme de bois ne contenant pas seulement du xylane.
