Incorporated as a foundation in 1971, and based in Geneva, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum is impartial and not-for-profit; it is tied to no political, partisan or national interests. The World Economic Forum is under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Government.

The World Economic Forum does not use any abbreviation for its own name. However, the form "WEF" is currently used by official bodies and the media.

Fondé en 1971 par Klaus SCHWAB, son Président, professeur de stratégie industrielle à l'Université de Genève, le Forum publie, depuis 1979, un rapport sur la compétitivité globale et des analyses sur les performances économiques régionales. Il développe des réunions régionales et des groupes thématiques, sur le changement climatique ou les technologies innovantes.

Sur son site, le Forum économique mondial n'utilise aucune abréviation se rapportant à sa désignation. Toutefois, l'abréviation «FEM» est couramment utilisée par les organismes officiels et les médias.
