L'appareil de radiographie comprend un tube à rayons X qui projette ses rayons au travers de l'organisme sur un film sensible argentique (ou un système numérique). Le patient est installé sur une table mobile et le tube est manipulé à distance par un bras articulé (les manipulateurs évitent ainsi les radiations derrière une vitre protectrice blindée) pour permettre les prises de vue de face, de profil et dans l'axe de l'organe avec des incidences précises.
