The Indians prepare a hallucinogenic drink, variously known as ayahuasca, caapi, yajé, pindé or natém, from the bark of Banisteriopsis caapi, "the vine of the soul," a forest liana that tends to grow in charming double helixes. ... One effect of ayahuasca is to overstimulate brain functions that depend on the neurotransmitter serotonin, a biochemical process that can become manifest as a hallucination.
