An alkaloid ... from Corynanthe johimbe K. Schum. (Rubiaceae) and from Rauwolfia serpentina L. Benth (Apocynaceae). It possesses adrenergic blocking properties and is used in arteriosclerosis and angina pectoris, and formerly as a local anesthetic and mydriatic and for its purported aphrodisiac properties.
