Cette expression, littéralement «technologie de l'argent» ou «technologie financière», allie au japonais zai (finance) la contraction du mot anglais technology; elle est entrée dans le langage financier international depuis que les sociétés industrielles nippones, désolées de voir leurs profits s'amenuiser par suite du renchérissement du yen, ont tenté de les restaurer en jouant à la Bourse ou en spéculant sur les bons des Trésors japonais et américain. C'est une forme de gestion agressive qui, en d'autres lieux, serait tout simplement qualifiée de «spéculation financière».
