A launcher that holds a vehicle in position and releases the rocket simultaneously at two points so that the buildup of thrust, normally rocket thrust, is sufficient to take the missile or vehicle directly into the air without need of a takeoff run and without imposing a pitch rate release.

[...] les USA ont commencé à développer le concept de décollage ZEL, c’est à dire le décollage «sur place» d’un chasseur classique. Après des essais non pilotés, l'US Air Force réalise son premier décollage ZEL réussi avec un F-84 lancé d'une rampe mobile à Edwards AFB [Air Force Base] en 1953. Les lanceurs mobiles étaient stratégiques parce qu'ils pouvaient être déplacés et étaient donc difficilement détectables par l’ennemi. De plus, l’USAF [United States Air Force] avait commandé l’étude d’abris durcis pour les lanceurs ZEL.
