Les 16 000 espèces de lichens recensées se répartissent en trois types selon leur forme biologique : les crustacés forment des croûtes sur les rochers, les foliacés ont l'apparence de feuilles. On les trouve aussi sur les rochers, ou les troncs d'arbre. Enfin, les lichens fruticuleux, végétaux épiphytes à l'aspect de lanières.
