Following is their answer, "With reference to your e-mail of February 1, 1999, regarding the correct spelling of our Organization, please find below the full name correctly spelled out in our four official languages. Please note that in English there are two words but no hyphen and caps (Latin American), in Spanish there is one word without hyphen (Latinoamericana), and there is a hyphen in French (latino-américaine) and in Portuguese (Latino-americana). Organización Latinoamericana de Energia; Latin American Energy Organization; Organização Latino-americana de Energía; Organisation latino-américaine de l'énergie".

De acuerdo con el convenio que establece la Organización, su sede es la ciudad de Quito, Ecuador; y sus objetivos y funciones son los siguientes: a. Promover la solidaridad de acciones entre los países miembros para el aprovechamiento y defensa de los recursos naturales de sus respectivos países y de la región en su conjunto, utilizándolos en la forma que cada uno, en ejercicio de sus indiscutibles derechos de soberanía, lo estime más apropiado a sus intereses nacionales. b. Unir esfuerzos para propiciar un desarrollo independiente de los recursos y capacidades energéticas de los miembros. c. Promover una política efectiva y racional para la exploración, explotación, transformación y comercialización de los recursos energéticos de los miembros. d. Propiciar la adecuada preservación de los recursos energéticos de la región, mediante su racional utilización. e. Propugnar la industrialización de los recursos energéticos y la expansión de las industrias que hagan posible la producción de la energía. f. Estimular entre los miembros la ejecución de proyectos energéticos de interés común.
