Carbón cubierto: dadas las características de la enfermedad, es muy difícil reconocer plantas enfermas en el cultivo. Las espigas afectadas quedan erectas y de menor altura, sin estar inclinadas como las espigas llenas y con una coloración verde azulada. Los granos son más cortos y gruesos con un tegumento muy fino que deja ver una masa oscura de clamidosporas, que se rompen ante leves presiones; está es la forma en que se infectan los granos sanos durante las cosecha.
