(i) The unconsolidated material on the immediate surface of the earth that serves as a natural medium for the growth of land plants. (ii) The naturally occurring unconsolidated material on the surface of the earth that has been influenced by parent material, climate (including the effects of moisture and temperature), macro- and micro-organisms, and relief, all acting over a period of time to produce soil that may differ from the material from which it was derived in many physical, chemical, mineralogical, biological, and morphological properties. 3, record 3, English, - soil
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
For the purpose of the Canadian taxonomic system, the earth's surface (the material that is to be classified) is divided into soil and nonsoil. Soil is the naturally occurring, unconsolidated, mineral or organic material at the earth's surface that is capable of supporting plant growth. It extends from the surface to 15 cm (6 inches) below the depth at which properties produced by soil-forming processes can be detected. 3, record 3, English, - soil

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
2, record 3, French, - sol

Corrosion by gases - Chemical reactions between metals and gases produce two effects on the metal: metal is consumed, and the metal's properties are changed. Although corrosion by gases is similar to corrosion by liquids, two important differences are found: first, in gases, the "products of corrosion" usually remain on the surface, forming in some systems a protective film, and second, local electrochemical cell reactions are suppressed. 3, record 4, English, - corrosion%20product

3, record 4, French, - produit%20de%20corrosion

Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Wet hydrogen sulfide attacks mild steels and forms iron sulfide (FeS) as a corrosion product. On new steel, this attack is very rapid, but as the iron sulfide forms, it provides a protective coating or scale and corrosion drops to a low rate. A thickness of metal can be specified as "corrosion allowance" and the remaining steel then becomes virtually immune to further corrosion. 1, record 5, English, - corrosion%20allowance
