An immobilized enzyme system is the material which results from immobilization of an enzyme onto a support matrix. Magnetic support matrices and immobilized enzyme systems offer several advantages when compared to nonmagnetic systems. For example, separation of such materials from other nonmagnetic solids by use of a magnetic field can permit separations otherwise difficult or impossible to perform. Such a situation is represented by the case where two enzymes, with different deactivation times, are used concurrently on a substrate, with one immobilized enzyme system magnetic and the other nonmagnetic. In this case, after one enzyme is exhausted, the other may be readily recovered and reused by magnetic separation of the two immobilized enzyme systems, which will be recognized as offering great benefits in economy. 1, record 8, English, - magnetic%20support

1, record 9, Spanish, - galvan%C3%B3metro%20de%20cuadro%20m%C3%B3vil

Superconducting magnets are manufactured by winding turns of superconducting material, in the form of layers of conductor, insulator, and a support material, on a mandrel to form pancake coils that are stacked on one another to form a completed magnet winding. The superconducting material is typically formed into a flat band of material that has limited flexibility and low structural strength. To efficiently wind the flat superconductor and get the end leads located on the outside of the coils for electrical termination, the coils are often wound in pairs from the inside to the outside which requires a winding transition portion at the inside that connects to each coil in the pair. This forms what is called a "double pancake" assembly. 1, record 10, English, - winding%20transition

1, record 10, French, - transition%20du%20bobinage

A field line is a locus that is defined by a vector field and a starting location within the field. A vector field defines a direction at all points in space; a field line may be constructed by tracing a path in the direction of the vector field. More precisely, the tangent line to the path at each point is required to be parallel to the vector field at that point. Field lines are useful for visualizing vector fields, which consist of a separate individual vector for every location in space. If the vector field describes a velocity field, then the field lines follow stream lines in the flow. Perhaps the most familiar example of a vector field described by field lines is the magnetic field, which is often depicted using field lines emanating from a magnet. 1, record 12, English, - field%20line

5, record 12, French, - ligne%20de%20champ

All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole (2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines (just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60,000 kilometers (50 to 37,280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300,000 kilometers (186,500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 16, English, - Earth%27s%20magnetic%20field

... the electrorheological effect lies in a phenomenon termed electrical polarizability. In an electric field - between, say, a pair of charged metal plates - the positively charged protons inside a particle will be attracted toward one electrode while the negatively charged electrons will be attracted toward the opposite electrode. The result is that the positive and negative charges shift somewhat inside the particle, each in an opposite direction. A particle in an electric field thus becomes an electric dipole, whose positive and negative poles are analogous to a magnet's north and south poles. The strength of this effect varies according to the electrical polarizability of the substance. If the polarizability is large, then large amounts of electric charge shift over large distances toward the particles' opposite poles. If the polarizability is small, then the particles hardly respond at all to an applied electric field. 1, record 23, English, - electrorheological%20effect

1, record 25, French, - Captosonic

The Weigand card contains a series of parallel wires embedded in the bottom half of the card. The wire is a specially treated ferromagnetic wire which produces a sudden change in magnetic flux when exposed to a slow changing magnetic field. Each wire in the badge can be assigned a logic "0" or "1" by placing it in the proper position relative to the resetting magnets and sensing coils in the card reader. This type of badge is impervious to accidental erasure and it is difficult to alter or duplicate. (Protection of Assets Manual, volume 1, section 8-27.)
