The measurement of heights in the atmosphere (altitude), generally by means of an altimeter.

CONT

Altimetry is a term which describes a method of measuring the altitudes of things with remote spacecraft. It is usually performed with a laser. Laser altimeters bounce beams of light from the surface and back to the spacecraft to measure the heights of mountains and depths of valleys on remote planets. This is even done for our own planet.

Radar Penetration. Radar wavelengths also influence penetrability below target tops to ground surfaces. Depth of penetration increases with wavelength: L and P band radar penetrate deeper than K or X bands. In forests, shorter wavelengths, such as C band, reflect mainly from the first leaves encountered, thus, from the canopy tops. At longer wavelengths, most tree leaves are too small to have much influence on backscatter, although branches will interact, so that canopies are penetrated to varying degrees.

Les travaux effectués à ce jour ont produit des résultats significatifs quant à la caractérisation du relief et de la rugosité de surface, et l’étude des propriétés diélectriques des matériaux qui conditionnent les capacités de pénétration du radar.

L'onde radar est réfléchie par une surface variable en fonction de la morphologie des arbres qui constituent la première dizaine de mètres en dessous du toit de la canopée. Les données radar, très précises en planimétrie, ne le sont donc qu'à 30 m près en altimétrie(épaisseur de la canopée moins la pénétration du radar). Elle sont par conséquent difficilement utilisables pour étudier la structure fine de la canopée forestière, mais peuvent être utiles pour détecter des structures à grande échelle, liée par exemple à la topographie.
