Le brutalisme des Smithson, très influencé par l'esthétique de Mies van der Rohe, c'est-à-dire l'exhibition la plus franche possible de la structure de l'édifice, dépasse cependant celle-ci par ses solutions techniques plus «brutales», par exemple par des canalisations visibles; il n’ est pas éloigné non plus du concept structural et spatial qui en 1953 avait régi la construction par l'Américain Louis Kahn du bâtiment de l'Art Center de l'université Yale à New Haven(Connecticut, États-Unis). Il impose moins un nouveau style d’architecture qu'une nouvelle manière de résoudre les problèmes actuels de construction. Pour de nombreux critiques et architectes, le brutalisme en tant que style est né en 1956 au moment où Le Corbusier achevait les maisons Jaoul à Neuilly. Ces petits immeubles de gros béton armé et de brique devinrent en effet la principale source d’inspiration d’un courant brutaliste dont l'Anglais James Frazer Stirling fut considéré comme le chef de file(ensemble résidentiel de Ham Common, Londres, 1958). 3, record 5, French, - brutalisme
