La métamorphose est complète quand la pupe est inactive et ne se pourrit pas; elle est incomplète quand il n’y a pas de pupe, ou quand la nymphe est active et se nourrit, dans le premier cas les insectes sont dits holométaboles et dans le second cas hémimétaboles.

Winged orders - grasshoppers, crickets, dragonflies, leaf hoppers, bugs, and many others - are similar to the adult but lack the wings and reproductive system, which gradually develop during the course of subsequent instars. This type of development is called gradual, or incomplete (hemimetabolous development) etc.
