Javel water takes its name from the ancient village of Javel, now just one of Paris' many neighbourhoods. In 1777, Count d'Artois founded the "Manufacture pour les Acides et Sels minéraux" in Javel, where the chemist Claude-Louis Berthollet worked. While searching for a method that would ease the work of washerwomen who had to whiten clothes by exposing them to sunlight, Berthollet came across a water solution that bleached cloth artificially, and he called it "eau de Javel." 12, record 19, English, - Javel%20water

A treatment, most often SO2, but in some cases H2SO4 or HCl, applied a) After a final chlorine dioxide, hyprochlorite or peroxide stage to destroy residual bleaching agent and remove metal ions which prevents brightness loss and avoids fibre degradation, and to create a pH favourable for brightness stability (alkaline pulps tend to yellow on exposure to light and air); b) As a pretreatment before an oxygen stage, which tends to improve both brightness and physical strength, probably by removing metal ions from pulp; and c) Between stages, such as peroxide-hydrosulphite, to eliminate the washing steps by creating acid conditions necessary for the hydrosulphite stage, and to destroy residual peroxide by reduction which would otherwise consume costly hydrosulphite; d) Has been used in place of a chelation stage in a TCF sequence with peroxide. In this application the PH is very important. 1, record 33, English, - acid%20treatment

1, record 33, French, - traitement%20%C3%A0%20l%26rsquo%3Bacide

An oxidative bleaching stage often in the third stage of a CEH or CdEH arrangement, where the active component is sodium or calcium hypochlorite in an alkaline medium. The brightening is achieved by destructive oxidation of the lignin, and the continuous presence of the alkali leads to the solution of the reaction products, thus opening deeper layers of lignin in the fibre to further attack. 2, record 35, English, - hypochlorite%20bleaching

1, record 35, French, - blanchiment%20%C3%A0%20l%27hypochlorite

Hypochlorite solutions are water solutions containing a soluble hypochlorite. The solutions vary over a wide range in concentration. The solutions are alkaline and corrosive but are not flammable. If the hypochlorite solutions contact strong acids, a decomposition takes place to produce the noxious chlorine type gases. Contact with textile fibers, etc., will cause severe damage to fibers and to colours. The solutions are used for water-treatment, bleaching, etc. 1, record 53, English, - hypochlorite%20solution

The sodium alkalinity of the sodium hypochlorite precipitates the hardness of the dilution water in preparation tanks; it can result in the furring of pipes and feeding equipment. This can be remedied ... by placing in the tank on the occasion of each filling approximately 50g of hexametaphosphate of sodium to 100 litres of water. 1, record 54, English, - furring
