A ridge of ice that forms at the edge of an inadequately insulated and ventilated roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof, bringing the water that backs up behind it to work its way under shingles/shakes and to leak into a home, causing damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.

Ice dams form when melted snow refreezes at roof edges. ... Three things are required for an ice dam to form: snow, heat to melt the snow and cold to refreeze the melted snow into solid ice.
