On December 7, 1983, when the office of Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce was abolished, the Secretary of State for External Affairs was given the portfolio of External Affairs and International Trade.

In 1985, the "Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Act" continued the Department of External Affairs under the name "Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade," over which presided the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On June 26, 2013, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency amalgamated. The department was continued under the name "Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development."

En 1985, la «Loi sur le ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international» a maintenu le ministère aux Affaires extérieures sous la dénomination de «ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international», placé sous l'autorité du ministre des Affaires étrangères.

Le 26 juin 2013, le ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international a fusionné avec l'Agence canadienne de développement international. Le ministère fut maintenu sous la dénomination de «ministère des Affaires étrangères, du Commerce et du Développement».
