Dans le cadre des Empires coloniaux se développe une agriculture spéculative dite «agriculture de plantation», régulée à l'échelle internationale par les grands marchés et la loi du profit. Ainsi apparaît une agriculture de masse, fondée notamment sur les plantes de la Découverte. Les principales cultures de plantation sont les plantes à fibres (coton, jute), à sucre (canne), à huile (arachide, palmier à huile), les fruits tropicaux (banane), les stimulants (thé, café, cacao), l'hévéa, etc.
