Ainsi apparaît une agriculture de masse, fondée notamment sur les plantes de la Découverte. Les principales cultures de plantation sont les plantes à fibres (coton, jute), à sucre (canne), à huile (arachide, palmier à huile), les fruits tropicaux (banane), les stimulants (thé, café, cacao), l'hévéa, etc.
