En introduction, revue des éléments de cartologie, types de cartes et systèmes cartographiques, dont le système canadien. La carte comme instrument de perception des faits et d'observation du milieu. Complémentarité de cet instrument avec l'observation sur le terrain et l'observation indirecte par l'image photographique. La carte comme moyen d'investigation locale ou régionale, étude des formes, des textures géographiques et du mode d'organisation en association avec des concepts généraux.
