L'eau (la pluie) commence à s'infiltrer dans les fissures du massif de granite complètement solidifié et cette eau va commencer un long travail de transformation : certains minéraux du granite changent de couleur, se détachent, la roche dure le long des fissures devient friable. Ce granite transformé autour des blocs est appelé l'arène granitique (c'est du granite pourri). Cette arène granitique va être dégagée, emportée, transportée par l'eau et devenir du sable grossier.
