Pratiqué avec distinction par des mathématiciens comme H.-O. Peitgen et des physiciens comme R. Voss, des informaticiens comme F.K. Musgrave (Yales) ou des peintres comme D. Hockney, l'art fractal fait depuis plusieurs années l'objet de grandes expositions-spectacles (Los Angeles County Museum of Art et Metropolitan Museum en 1988, Guggenheim Museum en 1990, Lincoln Center in 1991). Certains y incluent les arts sonores fractals et même la littérature inspirée par l'autosimilarité prosodique ou la symétrie du calembour.
