Participation d'un groupe avoisinant. Interaction directe entre, d'une part, un centre réactionnel (souvent, mais pas nécessairement, un centre carbénium naissant) et, d'autre part, des électrons appartenant à la même molécule et pouvant être ceux du doublet libre d'un atome ou ceux de liaisons-[sigma] ou [pi], ceci à condition qu'ils ne soient pas conjugués avec le centre réactionnel. On distingue quelquefois les participations n, [sigma] et [pi].
