Par contre, «asymptotique» se combine de préférence avec «approche», «comportement», «développement», «direction», «estimation», «ligne», «limite», «raccordement», «solution», «trajectoire» et «valeur». On dit «être asymptote à quelque chose», «être asymptotiquement stable ou instable», et «tendre ou converger asymptotiquement vers un attracteur».
