La définition qu'en donne le Trésor de la langue française est sans doute la plus complète et la plus claire : «[En parlant d'une personne ou d'un organisme exerçant une fonction partic.] Droits, devoirs, pouvoirs liés à une fonction.» Le droit de type britannique a, en l'occurrence, une vision qui diffère de celle du droit romano-germanique. En effet, dans l'indication de ce qu'un administrateur ou un responsable déterminé «peut et doit faire», le légiste anglais emploie, seuls ou réunis en groupes de deux termes ou plus, les mots «powers, duties, functions» et «responsibilities». [...] Ainsi, dans certains contextes, «attributions» pourrait à lui seul rendre tout le groupe «powers, duties, functions and responsibilities». Dans d'autres, il rendrait très bien «responsibilities» seul, de même que «mission» ou «mandat» pourrait correspondre à tout ou partie de «duties, powers and responsibilities». Quant au mot «fonction», il équivaut aussi bien, à l'occasion, à «functions» qu'à «duties», surtout lorsque ce dernier terme désigne les éléments d'une analyse de poste. C'est donc toujours le contexte de la notion à exprimer qui doit guider le légiste dans le choix du terme juste. Pour mémoire, voici toutefois quelques équivalences : Emploi groupé. «Pouvoirs et fonctions» ou le plus souvent «attributions» correspondra aussi bien à «powers, duties, functions and responsibilities» qu'à «powers, duties and functions» ou «powers and duties». 5, record 7, French, - attributions
