"Liquid Plugs" of sewage, separated by air gaps, enter the system at a pre-determined ratio of atmospheric air to waste, and are propelled through the vacuum mains at a high velocity to a central vacuum station. Due to friction and gravity the "liquid plugs" will tend to break down and to reform these plugs, transport pockets are installed several hundred feet apart.

Les «bouchons liquides» d'eaux usées, séparés par des vides d'air, pénètrent dans le système dans une proportion préfixée d'air atmosphérique et d'eaux usées puis circulent à une vitesse élevée dans les canalisations principales sous vide jusqu'au poste de collecte.
