[In 1997], Health Canada also established the Office of Health and the Information Highway (OHIH) as Health Canada's focal point for all matters concerning the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in the health sector. The strategic orientations for OHIH were knowledge development, partnerships and collaboration, and federal policy development.

In 2004, OHIH's Privacy Policy Division (now the Access to Information and Privacy Division) became part of Health Canada's Health Policy Branch. The remainder of OHIH joined Health Canada's Corporate Services Branch and is known as the Health and the Information Highway (HIH) section.

En 2004, la Division de la politique sur la protection des renseignements personnels de ce bureau (devenue la Division de l'accès à l'information et de la protection des renseignements personnels) s'est intégrée à la Direction générale de la politique de la santé de Santé Canada. Les autres secteurs du BSI se sont joints à la Direction générale des services de gestion de Santé Canada, pour former la Division de la santé et l'Inforoute (DSI).
