CA[star]net, was the Canadian Internet transit service backbone linking over 20 regional networks across Canada and operated until March 31, 1997 on a non-profit basis by CA[star]net Networking Inc. CANARIE was involved during its early development and supported the upgrade of the network from largely 56 kbps links in 1993 to an aggregate Canadian capacity of 100 Mbps in 1996 with three 45 Mbps links to the US [United States].
