The Canadian component of Internet began to take shape during the mid-1980s when universities in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec formed links with the U.S.-based network. Then, in 1990, the National Research Council designated the University of Toronto and Toronto-based IBM Canada to set up CA net, which links provincially run computer networks across the country and acts as the Canadian segment of Internet.
