The male orientation of the language in the English version of the Covenant reflects the age in which it was writtenand assumed that the use of, for example, male pronouns included the female. Thus, references to “his” rights mustbe read as including women and may not be construed as exclusionary.

Adopté par l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU en décembre 1966, le Pacte international relatif aux droits civils et politiques (PIDCP) est entré en vigueur en mars 1976. Le caractère androcentrique de la version anglaise du Pacte traduit la mentalité de l’époque à laquelle il a été rédigé. On présumait alors que l’usage de pronoms masculins, par exemple, englobait automatiquement le féminin.
