Created in 1963 and incorporated in 1968 as the Centre Monchanin, it subsequently took the name Monchanin Cross-Cultural Center in 1979. The new name, Intercultural Institute of Montreal (1990), reflects its present mission and activities.

L'IIM a été fondé en 1963 et incorporé en 1968 sous le nom de Centre Monchanin. En 1979, il devient le Centre interculturel Monchanin. En 1990, il adopte son nom actuel afin de mieux refléter l'esprit de ses objectifs et de son action. L'Institut Interculturel de Montréal se définit aujourd'hui comme un institut de recherche-action.
