La force dépend du coefficient de portance, déterminé par la forme de l'aile et par l'angle d'attaque : sa valeur typique est de l'ordre de 0,3. Il est ainsi plus facile de décoller face au vent : à la vitesse de l'avion s'ajoute la vitesse du vent, et la force résultant du vent relatif sur les ailes est plus forte. Pour le vol à altitude constante, il suffit que le déplacement soit suffisamment rapide par rapport à l'air pour que la portance compense le poids... Lorsque l'on augmente la vitesse de l'avion, la portance totale augmente. Sans action sur l'inclinaison ou la forme de l'aile, qui modifie le coefficient de portance, l'avion monterait.
