En ajoutant quelques composants (détendeur NS-1, etc.) au système de frein d'une locomotive, on peut faire en sorte que les semelles de frein restent toujours en contact avec les roues de la locomotive; l'échauffement qui en résulte empêche la neige et la glace de se déposer sur les bandages. Le frein reste ainsi pleinement efficace, même par grand froid.
