Record 2 2002-09-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cooling and Ventilating Systems
DEF

A finned aluminium cooling wheel mounted on the fan shaft between the inboard bearing and the drive panel to dissipate heat conducted along the shaft.

CONT

Exhausters of standard construction will withstand gas temperature up to 750 F but will require bearing protection for temperatures in excess of 300 F. A heat slinger which is a small heat-conducting fan wheel attached to the shaft between the fan housing and the inboard bearing, will protect bearings up to 600 F temperature.

Record 3 2002-06-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Thermodynamics
  • Spacecraft
DEF

A heavy layer of heat absorbing material placed within the outerskin of aircraft designed to reach high supersonic speeds.

CONT

... the wall of a combustion chamber may be uncooled if the duration of the operation is a few seconds only. In such cases, the metal acts as a heat sponge or sink, absorbing heat for a short period.

OBS

heat sink: term officially approved by the Aeronautical Term Standardization Committee (ATSC) - Helicopters and by the Spatial Terminology Standardization Committee (STSC).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Thermodynamique
  • Engins spatiaux
DEF

"heat sink": Tooling applied adjacent to weld zone to absorb heat and to prevent heat flow into parent material.

DEF

"heat sink": any objects, such as a solid mass of heat-conducting material, placed at work to prevent local overheating during an operation such as soldering.

DEF
