To karyotype refers to the systematic display of all the chromosomes in a single somatic cell. Morphologic identification is based on the relative size of the chromosomes, their arm ratio, and certain secondary morphologic features. Individual human chromosomes can now be identified after staining with various banding techniques.

Les caractères morphologiques différents des chromosomes dans les noyaux en division permettent d'établir des caryotypes [c'est-à-dire un classement] par paire d'homologues. Pour ce faire, on s'appuie sur la longueur des chromosomes, sur la position de leur centromère, sur leur forme... L'établissement du caryotype, dans l'espèce humaine, permet de déceler des anomalies portant, entre autres, sur le nombre de chromosomes; dans le cas du mongolisme par exemple, il existe un chromosome surnuméraire de la 21e paire (Trisomie 21).
