Strictly speaking, it would be normal to use the verb "draw" when constituting a sample by random methods and the verb "select" when constituting a sample by purposive methods.

Le bulletin, C'est-à-dire, (cf. RCB, vol. 3, n° 2, 1964, p. 4) qualifie «tirer un échantillon» d'anglicisme. Ce terme est néanmoins le plus courant dans les ouvrages sérieux.
