En décembre 1987, la farine de viande et d'os dérivée de ruminants utilisée dans l'alimentation du bétail a été identifiée comme l'agent responsable de l'ESB le plus probable (1). L'épidémie du Royaume-Uni est attribuée à deux facteurs principaux : la présence d'une proportion élevée de viande de mouton infectée par la tremblante dans les rations et l'utilisation de systèmes d'équarrissage qui n'éliminaient pas la cause de l'infection. En conséquence, le Royaume-Uni a interdit l'utilisation de protéines de ruminants dans l'alimentation du bétail en juillet 1988 (2).
