Les failles actives dans la croûte terrestre peuvent glisser brutalement en générant des séismes, ou bien de manière continue par fluage. Même en cas de séisme, du fluage s’observe souvent après la rupture contribuant ainsi au glissement de la faille. Le fluage, en relaxant les contraintes, évite le développement des séismes. [...] Un bel exemple de glissement asismique s’observe dans la partie centrale de la faille de San Andreas, en Californie, ou aucun séisme ne se produit hors de la microsismicité.
