Depuis quarante ans, l'architecture série dite de Von Neumann est appliquée dans tous calculateurs. Elle reste limitée en vitesse de traitement car les machines n'exécutent qu'une seule instruction à la fois et sur une seule donnée (architecture SISD) selon un mode séquentiel. La vitesse étant au plus égale à la fréquence maximale supportable par les portes logiques du circuit processeur, soit environ 100 MHz, on ne peut ici espérer dépasser les 100 millions d'opérations en virgule flottante par seconde (mégaflops). Tous les microprocesseurs du marché sont dans ce cas, le calcul arithmétique étant l'application typique.
