L'équivalent anglais de "lessivage" est "leaching". Le phénomène qui se produit au printemps (spring acid shock) ou à l'occasion de pluies abondantes, et que les anglais appellent "flushing", est un lessivage dont la particularité est d'être particulièrement rapide; il fait augmenter soudainement le pH des cours d'eau et cause la mort des poissons.

On appelle lessivage, l'entraînement, vers les profondeurs du sol, sous l'action percolante de l'eau de pluie, des ions minéraux solubles et des fines particules d'argile.
