Taking the first example cited, we can describe the medium as a network of pores that can be open or closed ... and monitor the penetration of a fluid by detecting whether pores at some level are wet or dry. A crucial point to note is that a site at the intersection of pores that have not been reached by the fluid cannot become wet. The dry state is said to be absorbing.
