Chez les enfants la mortalité s'exprime par le rapport entre le nombre de décès dans les diverses catégories d'âge après la naissance (numérateur) et le nombre total des naissances vivantes dans l'année (dénominateur), à l'exception des taux de la mortalité périnatale et fœtale, où le dénominateur représente le total des naissances (naissances vivantes et mortinatalités).

Ne pas confondre avec mortalité infantile (infantile ne renvoie qu'à la première enfance).
