NAOS n'est pas un instrument indépendant, mais une bonnette qui sera installée entre un instrument et le télescope. Sa caractéristique est de corriger, grâce à la technique de l'optique adaptative, des effets de l'atmosphère qui déforme les images et en réduit la résolution angulaire. Cette bonnette, qui pourrait être installée sur n'importe quel foyer Nasmyth, sera placée devant l'instrument CONICA.
