D'autres systèmes d'entrées de données 3D ont fait leur apparition aux États-Unis. Par exemple Science Accessories a mis au point un numériseur sonique qui joue un rôle similaire à celui d'un sonar pour la saisie 3D; cet appareil se connecte à un terminal graphique Tektronix 4050 programmable en Basic, pour le traitement des données acquises. Cette technique a déjà été mise en œuvre dans divers numériseurs 2D : on mesure simplement le temps de propagation d'ultra-sons entre un émetteur fixé à la pointe du stylet de l'opérateur et trois microphones linéaires matérialisant les axes X, Y, Z.
