A daisy inflorescence has florets arranged in two systems of spirals that radiate from a central axis. Although it appears to be symmetrical, the number of clockwise versus counterclockwise spirals is not equal. These spirals are referred to as parastichies.

Si l'on observe une fleur de tournesol [...], si l'on regarde alternativement les fleurons du disque de tournesol, à l'automne, lorsque pétales et étamines sont tombés, il est facile de discerner l'arrangement spiralé des graines. Deux familles de spirales se partagent le disque et se déroulent en des directions opposées. Les botanistes appellent ces spirales des «parastiques». Certaines tournent à droite : les dextres, les autres à gauche, les senestres.
