Le Petit barré doit son nom français aux zébrures noires qui ornent ses flancs et dont est privé son congénère, le Choquemort. Il se nourrit de petits crustacés, de mollusques, de vers et de plantes. La ponte a lieu en été; les œufs, d'un diamètre de 2 mm, sont au nombre de 250. Les adultes ne donnent aucune protection aux œufs et aux alevins. Le Petit barré entre dans le régime de plusieurs poissons [...] On le trouve dans le Saint-Laurent et les Maritimes, ainsi que sur le littoral atlantique jusqu'à la Caroline du Sud.
