Les plongées d'incursions profondes partent de la surface et peuvent atteindre des profondeurs voisines de 150 m. Le plongeur ne peut plus respirer de l'air normal, mais doit utiliser un mélange gazeux physiologiquement adéquat. Dans cette forme de plongée, l'utilisation d'une courbe de remontée lente entrecoupée de paliers devient beaucoup trop longue; en effet, il faut compter environ un jour pour retourner à la surface après seulement une heure de travail à 150 m. La décompression devrait durer plusieurs jours pour un travail ne dépassant pas 3 ou 4 heures.
