The International Decade of the World's Indigenous People, was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in its resolution 48/163 of December 21st, 1993, and launched on December 9th, 1994. Under the theme "Indigenous People: Partnership in Action," the Decade offers an opportunity to strengthen further the partnership established between indigenous people and the international community, and between indigenous people and States. The International Decade of the World's Indigenous People is seen as an opportunity to take up the challenge of alleviating the situation of indigenous populations and to intensify efforts to respond to their legitimate demands and needs.

Le Décennie internationale des populations autochtones a été proclamée par l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies dans sa résolution 48/163 du 21 décembre 1993, et elle a été lancée le 9 décembre 1994. Sous le thème «Populations autochtones : partenariat en action», la Décennie offre l'occasion de renforcer davantage le partenariat établi entre les populations autochtones et la communauté internationale, et entre les populations autochtones et les États. La Décennie internationale des populations autochtones est considérée comme étant une occasion de relever le défi consistant à améliorer la situation des populations autochtones et à intensifier les efforts visant à répondre à leurs demandes et à leurs besoins légitimes.
