Le porteur muet ou épidémiologiquement muet, est celui qui n'élimine pas l'agent dans son environnement (d'habitude temporaire). Un porteur peut être successivement actif ou muet.

OBS

Il est parfois dangereux sur le plan épidémiologique, de faire une différence nette entre les porteurs ouverts et muets, à cause des critères de diagnostic (culture positive ou négative), et de leur convertibilité réciproque facile (tuberculose).
