This Major Crown Project is a mid-life conversion and systems modernization project for four DDH 280 Tribal Class destroyers. Over the period 1986-96 the project also calls for modernizing and equipping the ships with area air systems capability. Each ship, which will retain its anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, will also be able to embark a Commander of a Canadian task group and will have major systems that have already been purchased. Public Works and Government Services Canada, the Department of National Defence and Industry Canada are in charge of the project.

Ce Grand projet de l'État prévoit la modernisation des systèmes et la conversion à mi-vie de quatre destroyers de classe Tribal DDH 280. De 1986 à 1996, les navires seront modernisés et équipés d'un système de défense aérienne de zone. Chaque navire, qui conservera sa capacité de lutte antisurface et anti-sous-marine, sera doté des structures pour accueillir le commandant d'un groupe opérationnel canadien et recevra les principaux systèmes déjà achetés. Travaux publics et Services gouvernementaux Canada, le ministère de la Défense nationale et Industrie Canada sont responsables de ce projet.
